What Is Phonological Awareness?
Phonological awareness is the ability to perceive, segment, and manipulate the sound units of language, independently of their meaning. It means hearing that a word can be broken into syllables, that two words rhyme, or that a word begins with a particular sound. It is an oral skill that develops well before a child learns to read or write.
There are several levels, from easiest to most demanding: the syllable (the easiest to hear), the rhyme and onset, and finally the phoneme — the smallest sound unit, which is abstract and harder to isolate. Awareness focused specifically on phonemes is called phonemic awareness, and it is the skill most directly tied to linking a sound to a letter.
Why Is It a Key Predictor of Reading?
Learning to read in an alphabetic language means learning to connect letters (graphemes) to sounds (phonemes). A child who cannot hear that a word is made of distinct sounds will struggle to understand why it is spelled the way it is.
This is why cognitive science treats phonological awareness as one of the strongest early predictors of reading success. France's Inserm dossier on learning disorders notes that fragile phonological awareness is among the signals associated with later reading difficulties, alongside trouble discriminating similar sounds.
Identifying weak phonological awareness early is not about labelling a child — it is about offering targeted activities when the brain is most receptive.
How Does It Develop, Step by Step?
Phonological awareness progresses from global to analytic units: from larger chunks (syllables) toward the smallest (phonemes). French Ministry of Education (Éduscol) resources describe a gradual progression across preschool.

Which Games Help Develop It?
Phonological awareness grows through simple games, with no special equipment, at home or at school:
- Syllables: clap each syllable of a word; count syllables of a name with tokens.
- Rhymes: find words that rhyme; invent short rhyming verses.
- Phonemes (more demanding): spot whether a sound is present in a word; blend two sounds into a syllable.
The golden rule is to keep it playful — a few minutes a day beat a long, forced session.
What Is the Link With Dyslexia and Prevention?
Dyslexia is a lasting disorder of learning to read and should not be confused with phonological awareness that is still developing. Yet the two are linked: many children with dyslexia show an underlying phonological deficit. Developing phonological awareness in preschool therefore has a preventive value — it strengthens a foundational skill at the right moment and helps spot children who struggle despite regular activities. French research has shown that structured phonological-awareness training can help struggling readers progress.
