What is stuttering?

Stuttering is a fluency disorder affecting about 1% of adults and up to 5% of preschool children. It manifests through sound, syllable or word repetitions, sound prolongations, and blocks.

When to see a speech therapist

Warning signs in children:

  • Stuttering lasting more than 6 months
  • Physical tension while speaking
  • Word avoidance or substitution
  • Family history of stuttering

Treatment approaches

The Lidcombe Program (ages 2-6) involves structured parent training. For adults, fluency shaping therapy and cognitive approaches are most effective. Cabdivin offers structured assessment templates with SSI-4 and OASES scales built in.
